  is a town in Sussex\, England\, that is famous for the Battle of Hastings
  in 1066\, when William\, duke of Normandy\, defeated Harold II of England
  and became the king of England. Hastings was also a Saxon settlement befo
 re the Norman invasion\, and had a castle that was later rebuilt by Willia
 m. Hastings began as a Saxon settlement. It was called Haesta ingas\, whic
 h means Haesta’s people. By the 10th century\, Hastings had grown into a l
 ittle market town. It even had its own mint.
