people going\n\nCome along on Saturday 25th July for a day trip by train
to historic Ely!\n\nAbout the city\nEly is a cathedral city\, set in the F
ens\, about 14 miles north east of Cambridge. An abbey was built here in A
D 673 and in 1083 the current cathedral was built (with modifications betw
een 1322-28 when the octagon was built). The cathedral is one of England's
most beautiful and largest. It is known locally as the 'ship of the fens'
.\n\nEly's most famous historical resident was Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658)
\, who was Lord Protector after the English Civil War when Britain was a r
epublic (1649-1660). He started out as a local tax collector\, or 'Farmer
of the Tithes'\, for the local parishes. It was up to Cromwell to ensure t
hat all the local taxes - including money\, wheat and straw - were deliver
ed to the Dean of the Cathedral. He was permitted to keep any excess colle
cted and soon became a man of property and quite considerable local status
. His house still stands\, which is now a museum.\n\nWe will be having a g
