SUMMARY:Tom Grosspietsch memorial skate
LOCATION:Daley Plaza
DESCRIPTION:Saved in Palaner as: saved\n\nPalaner match: 28% · why: lots of
people going\n\nThis summer we lost our dear friend and longtime leader\,
Tom Grosspietsch. Tom changed the lives of hundreds of skaters\, includin
g myself\, by bringing us together and showing us how to explore Chicago o
n skates. For over 20 years\, Tom led us through our streets\, first with
his group Skate Patrol and then with Windy City Skaters.\n\nArticle about
Tom in the Sun-Times\nPost about Tom’s legacy\n\nIn memory of Tom\, we wil
 l be skating 13 miles to 9 spots related to Tom’s life. Here’s a link to t
he route map .\n\nEvent info:\n\nStart & end location: Daley Plaza\, by th
e Picasso sculpture.\nMeet up: 7:20 pm\, roll out: 7:45 pm. The skate will
take roughly 3 hours. Before we roll out\, I'll post a live location trac
ker link in a comment on this page and our Instagram story so that any ska
ters who arrive late after we roll out can track us down.\nFor our night s
kates\, skaters are strongly encouraged to wear LED lights for visibility!
Skaters should also bring water to hydrate. Snacks like energy bars are a
good idea\, too.\nAll wheels welcome 🛼 🚲 🛹 - this event is hosted by inli
ne and roller skaters\, but feel free to join us on a bike or skateboard.\
n\nSkater skill level:\n\nSkaters must be able to brake / slow down. This
is not only for your safety but for the safety of others. We won't tolerat
e someone running into other skaters because they cannot brake! It's also
important because it will be necessary to stop quickly and reliably at tra
ffic lights and to control your speed when we skate down hills / inclines
(for example\, down steep ramps\, bridges over the interstate\, train trac
 ks\, and river).\nSkaters must feel comfortable skating at a pace of 8 - 1
2 mph. If you're unsure about your speed\, I recommend using a speedometer
app on your phone to check what pace you feel comfortable skating at.\nWe
skate in the streets! So\, we frequently encounter slight obstacles like
cracks in the pavement\, train tracks\, and pot holes. So\, skaters must f
eel comfortable skating or stepping over those obstacles\, as well as step
ping up curbs and stairs.\n\nSafety info & rules:\n\nPlease be sure to giv
e other skaters space and be mindful of them to avoid bumping into others.
\nHelmets\, wrist guards\, and pads are encouraged. These are especially i
mportant for less seasoned skaters\, but they're also a good idea for even
the most advanced of skaters.\nFor night skates\, skaters are strongly en
couraged to wear LED lights for visibility.\nI'll pace the skate with the
goal of keeping the group together. Keeping the group together helps with
safety because it improves our visibility to drivers. And it's also more f
un when we skate together!\nWhile leading the group\, I will stop at red l
ights and trying to time our pacing so that we go through green lights tog
ether. I'll try to minimize occurrences where the group gets split by a tr
affic light (i.e. the front of the group goes through a green light and th
en the back of the group gets stopped at a red light). However\, that inev
itably sometimes happens. If that happens to you\, please only cross the i
ntersection when it is safe! Do not blow through a red light without check
ing that it is safe to cross.\nWhen we're skating on a multi-lane street a
nd cars are present\, please stick to one lane (usually the right lane) so
that cars can pass us.\nSmoking: some skaters have a strong negative reac
tion to second hand smoke. For some\, it makes them feel sick\, for others
they just really don't like it. If you're going to smoke\, please do it a
way from the group and other skaters.\n\nLinks:\n\nWindy City Skaters on I
 nstagram\nWindy City Skaters Facebook group\nChicago Skating Subreddit - r

ting or riding with this group\, you accept responsibility for your own sa
fety and agree not to hold the group or its leaders liable. Skate at your
 own risk.
