SUMMARY:What It Is? Creative Lab
LOCATION:Seattle Central Library
DESCRIPTION:Saved in Palaner as: saved\n\nPalaner match: 25% · why: lots of
people going\n\nEvent Idea: “The Unthinkable Mind"\n\nA Writers Connect C
reative Lab\n\nFrequency: Bi-weekly\nInspired by: What It Is by Lynda Barr
 y\nWriting isn’t always about perfect sentences.\nSometimes it’s about scr
ibbles\, memories\, doodles\, and strange little ideas that sneak in throu
gh the side door.\nEvery other week we gather to explore creativity the wa
 y Lynda Barry teaches it—through images\, memory\, drawing\, and spontaneo
us writing. Her book encourages writers to reconnect with imagination and
childhood curiosity to unlock stories hiding beneath the surface.\nThis is
n’t a traditional critique group.\nIt’s a creative playground for writers
and artists.\n\nWhat Happens at Each Meetup\n\nEvery session includes thre
 e simple pieces:\n1. Warm-Up (10–15 minutes)\nQuick creative exercises to
 wake up the imagination:\n\nMemory sketches\nRandom word prompts\nDoodles
that become stories\n“Write without stopping” exercises\n\n2. The Barry Ex
periment (30–40 minutes)\nA playful activity inspired by What It Is\, such
as:\n\nThe Memory Map – draw a place from childhood and write what lived
 there\nThe Image Trigger – use a random picture to generate a story\nFour-
Panel Life Comic – tell a moment from your life in simple panels\nObject S
tories – write about an ordinary object that holds a memory\n\n3. Writers
 Connect Circle (20 minutes)\nWe talk about:\n\nwhat we wrote\nwhat surpris
ed us\nwhat’s hard about writing right now\nthe strange life of being a cr
eative person\n\nNo pressure to share.\nNo perfection required.\n\nWho Thi
 s Is For\n\nWriters\nArtists\nJournalers\nPeople who used to write\nAnyone
curious about creativity\n\nIf you can hold a pen\, you belong here.\n\nW
 hat to Bring\n\nNotebook or sketchbook\nPen or pencil\nOptional: colored m
arkers\, collage scraps\, or photos\n\nThe Spirit of the Group\n\nThis is
a place to write\, experiment\, vent about writing\, and remember why we s
tarted creating in the first place.\nBecause sometimes the best stories st
art as a messy doodle in the margin.
