SUMMARY:What Is Enlightenment?
LOCATION:Kapéj Coffee
DESCRIPTION:Saved in Palaner as: saved\n\nPalaner match: 30% · why: lots of
people going\n\nIn 1784\, Immanuel Kant answered the question "What is En
lightenment?" in a short\, influential essay published by Berlinische Mona
tsschrift. Defining Enlightenment as "mankind's exit from its self-incurre
d immaturity\," Kant advocated for "the freedom to make a public use of on
e’s reason in all\nmatters." He also offered what would become the motto o
f the Enlightenment — Sapere aude! — "Dare to know!"\n\nWriting two centur
ies later\, Michel Foucault evaluated the same question\, albeit looking b
ackward in time instead of forward. Foucault connects Kant's initial respo
nse with a subsequent "attitude of modernity"\, emphasizing a specific rel
ationship to the present-day and "the constitution of self as an autonomou
s subject."\n\nIn this Meetup\, we will discuss both essays as well as the
central question. Links to the respective texts can be found below:\n\nKa
