SUMMARY:Plato's Theaetetus (Part 1 )
LOCATION:Kapéj Coffee
DESCRIPTION:Saved in Palaner as: saved\n\nPalaner match: 27% · why: lots of
people going\n\nIn Plato's Theaetetus\, Socrates engages the brilliant yo
ung mathematician Theaetetus in an inquiry: \\What is knowledge (episteme)
? Together they wrestle with perception\, relativism (via Protagoras)\, th
e possibility of error\, false belief\, and the role of justification or "
account" (logos).\nThe discussion unfolds through three main definitions:\
n\nIs knowledge simply perception?\nIs it true judgment (or true belief)?\
nIs it true judgment with an account (what many see as an early version of
"justified true belief")?\n\nSocrates famously likens himself to a midwif
e of ideas—helping others give birth to thoughts while exposing their flaw
 s. The dialogue is rich with puzzles about relativism\, flux (Heraclitus)\
, the nature of the mind\, and why defining knowledge proves so elusive. I
t ends in aporia (impasse)\, but that very frustration sparks insight into
the questions: How do we know what we know? Can we ever escape circularit
y or skepticism?\nPlease read (or listen to) as much as you can in advance
. We are splitting this work into two separate meetup sessions.\n\nSession
1: Up to the end of the second definition ( through ~200d or so)\n\nCover
 s: Introduction\, the midwife metaphor\, Knowledge = Perception (and its r
efutation via Protagoras/Heraclitus)\, and Knowledge = True Judgment (incl
uding puzzles about false belief\, the Wax Tablet\, and Aviary models).\n\
 nResources:\n\nFull Text (PDF\, ~70 pages): Theatetus\nSummaries & Notes:\
 nPhilosophy Ideas summary (PDF)\neNotes in-depth\n\nAudio (LibriVox\, ~210
minutes): Theaetetus audiobook (I prefer the version narrated by Albert A
nderson\, published by Agora\, but it must be purchased)\nBonus: Socrates
as Midwife – Short dramatic performance: YouTube clip
