 t dates back to medieval times and is still partially surrounded by a moat
 .\n\nValence House Museum’s core collection totals around 20\,000 objects\
 , consisting of a wide range of artefacts which tell the story of Barking 
 and Dagenham and its people throughout the ages. The collection spans a wi
 de period of time\, from prehistory to the modern day.\n\nHighlights on di
 splay include the Dagenham Idol\, whalebones believed to be from the lower
  jaw of a Common Greenland Whale and the Fanshawe family portraits\, one o
 f the best collections of gentry portraits in Britain.\n\nAs well as explo
