SUMMARY:Practical Philosophy Meetup - Vancouver
LOCATION:David Lam Park
DESCRIPTION:Saved in Palaner as: saved\n\nPalaner match: 20% · why: lots of
people going · good weather for it\n\n🏛️ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOU
T?\nPractical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers
together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic\, practice communicat
ing\, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledg
e required! 😎\n\nPractical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy
should be accessible to all\, and not something reserved only for academi
cs. Each week we choose a topic\, and the goal is to use the conversation
to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topi
c.\n\nThe goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking\, Communication\,
and Community 🙌\n\n📓 HOW DOES IT WORK?\nEach week\, we pick one topic and
discuss it. The topic for the week is shared\, generally in the Whatsapp g
roup\, along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.\nWhen gro
ups get bigger than 7-8 people\, it’s important that we break into smaller
groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed
to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.\n\nGeneral Meetin
g Agenda\nEach Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
\n\n18:30-18:45 - People arrive and chat\, get to know each other before t
he ‘official' start.\n18:45-18:55 - Meeting introduction\, explanation of
Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week\, read the guidelines and
the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.\n18:5
5-20:15 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoug
hts on the topic\, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can
review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed\, but they are just there to he
lp guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.\n20:15-20:3
0 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - eac
h group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting an
d everyone takes a group photo.\n20:30 - The official meeting is over but
it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environ
ment\, so we often stick around\, chat\, and get to know each other.\n\n🧧P
RICING?\nPractical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend! We just ask that if
we are meeting in a café\, buy a beverage! Some chapters rent a space for
us to meet\, and they may ask for donations to help contribute to the cost
of rent. Donations will always be 100% voluntary though!\n\n💛 WHAT PEOPLE
SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY\n🗣 “I feel like Philosophy Club helps some
one build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while n
ot promoting what’s right and wrong” - Ekam\n\n🗣 “I got hooked from day 1
(the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel i
t is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and
increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who m
ight challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to h
ave openness and mind flexibility.” - Daniel\n\n🤓 FAQ\n\nWhat will we tal
k about? What's the topic?\n\nThe topic for the week is shared every Sund
ay in the Whatsapp group. We try to add the topic to the comment section o
n this event page as well but if you don’t see it\, the topic and the jump
-off points will be in our Whatsapp.\n\nDo I need to study or read anythin
g to attend?\n\nNo preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other t
hinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic\, not what an old
philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school
of thought to share\, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it\, but it
's not required.\n\nIs there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosop
hy is focused on?\n\nThe goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic disc
ussions\, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this\, we wan
t to hear from every realm of thought\, and don't study a particular schoo
l.\n\nIs it mostly men that attend?\n\nSurprisingly\, no! Although philoso
phy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys\, o
ur Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders\, and
we don’t meet in any dark rooms.\n\nCan I come alone?\n\nOf course you can
 \, we encourage it :)\n\nCan I be late?\n\nPlease don't be! We do have a 1
5 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out
\, but after that if you arrive too late\, it disrupts the flow of the con
versation.\n\nWhere do you meet?\n\nThe location is posted in Meetup and o
ur Whatsapp group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you joi
n the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practic
al Philosophy Club\, you can see our chapters on our website.\n\n🤝POLICY\n

mber without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in
person and being asked to message privately. Contacting or texting other p
articipants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in remov
