SUMMARY:Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park Summer Fair
LOCATION:Mile End Station
DESCRIPTION:Saved in Palaner as: saved\n\nPalaner match: 31% · why: lots of
people going\n\nTower Hamlets Cemetery\, one of the famed ‘Magnificent Se
ven’ London cemeteries of the Victorian era\, opened in 1841 to ease overc
rowding in smaller parish graveyards. After approximately 350\,000 burials
\, it was closed in 1966.\n\nFast forward 60 years to today\, and it has b
ecome a hub of heritage\, community and nature in the heart of the old Eas
t End-a tranquil nature reserve and designated Metropolitan Site of Import
ance for Nature Conservation (SINC)\, it is recognised as a critical site
for maintaining London biodiversity\, and therefore protected against deve
lopment. Weathered tombstones and monuments to paupers and celebrities of
Victorian yesteryear are squeezed between winding forest paths and grassy
shaded clearings\, fallen trees are repurposed to provide optimal environm
ents for biodiverse wildlife\, and local group Friends of Tower Hamlets Ce
metery-the same group whose community action in the 90s prevented councils
from removing thousands of memorials documenting the local people who liv
ed and died in the area-put on dozens of events each year that emphasize c
onnections between community\, creativity and landscape\, such as grave sy
mbolism tours\, festival flower headband making workshops\, bug safaris\,
monthly craft drop-ins\, food foraging walks\, nature inspired embroidery
classes and more-all of which are well worth attending as well so they're
worth keeping an eye on!\n\nTheir Summer Fair is a highlight of their cale
ndar\, with live folk music and theatre\, craft stalls from local artists\
, food and drink stalls from local traders\, guided tours by nature and he
ritage experts\, and a few more surprises yet to be revealed!\n\nIt runs f
rom 12pm to 5pm\, so we will meet outside nearby Mile End station at 11.45
and walk down\, and if there is interest afterwards\, we will head to one
of the many nearby pubs to continue chatting!\n\nEntrance is free\, but b
ring cash for snacks\, drinks and stalls! (all purchases help support the
conservation of this 31-acre woodland and protect London's biodiversity)\n
\n(This is a free event\, so we ask that you please keep RSVPs updated to
ensure that as many people as possible who want to come with the group are
able to. Cancellations with less than three days’ notice may be removed f
rom the group to prevent wasted spaces in future. Many thanks for your und
 erstanding!)\n\nText source: https://fothcp.org/summer-fair-2026/\nImage s
