ine. Check into motel\; enjoy Bar Harbor.\nDay 2\, 3\, or 4: Whichever day
has best weather\, drive to Baxter State Park (about two hours) past the
town of Millinocket. Leader will travel with the group to the trailhead bu
t will not hike\; once the group leaves leader will drive back to enjoy th
e bars in Bar Harbor.\nDays when we are not hiking Katahdin: We will spend
visiting the famed Acadia National Park and climb Cadillac Mountain and o
ther trails.\nDay 5: Drive and fly back to DC.\n\nEveryone is responsible
for their own travel and stay at Bar Harbor. We will form voluntary carpoo
ls for the drive from Boston. See below.\n\nFLIGHTS TO BOSTON\nThe leader
plans to fly as below. You are welcome to book the same fight\, or a diffe
rent one. As soon as you book\, let the leader know your flight plans by f

mind Acadia is a 4-5 hr drive from BOS).\n\nCARPOOLS\nNeither the Club no
r the leaders are responsible for coordinating transportation to/from the
trailhead. Hikers are not guaranteed to get a ride from the carpool locati
on. Carpooling is organized by the participants\, and they participate at
their own risk.\n\nOnce you join a carpool please let the leader know by f
illing out this Google sheet.\n\nSTAY\nHotel rates seem to start from $150
per night. Campsites are available for $20-$60. Let the leader know where
you plan to stay using this Google sheet.\n\nCARPOOL AND PARK ENTRY FEES\
nSuggest we add tolls\, park entry fees\, and twice the cost of gas\, and
share the total among all including driver.\n\nHIKING KATAHDIN\nThis is no
t your average walk-in-the-park. The distance is only 10.5 miles (via Hunt
Trail) but includes a 4\,000-foot elevation gain. The trail is rough and
rocky and requires significant boulder climbing. The upper parts of the tr
ail are exposed. Because of these reasons this hike is sometimes described
as the hardest hike east of the Mississippi. Not to be under-estimated.\n
\nThose attempting the hike must be physically fit and should train for a
few weeks before the attempt.\n\nITEMS TO BRING ON THE HIKE (courtesy: Cha
tGPT)\n\nPlenty of water (2–3 liters\, more on hot days)\nHigh-energy snac
ks and lunch\nWaterproof rain jacket\nWarm layer (temperatures at the summ
it can be much colder)\nHat and gloves (recommended even in late summer)\n
Hiking boots or trail shoes with excellent traction\nHeadlamp with fresh b
atteries\nMap (or offline map) and fully charged phone\nSmall first-aid ki
t\n\nPlus a couple of my own: Net to cover your face (flying insects can b
e ferocious on this mountain)\, bug spray\, and sunblock.\n\nLEADER APPROV
AL NEEDED\nIf you plan to hike Katahdin and you don't know the leader well
\, please introduce yourself asap and present your credentials. Do this be
fore booking your flights. If you just show up at the trailhead the leader
will not permit you to join the Club group.\n\nACADIA\nUnless you are hik
ing Katahdin you may spend as many as three days in Acadia National Park -
not nearly enough time to explore it. Attractions include a drive along t
he spectacular Ocean Drive\, a hike up the 1\,500-foot Cadillac Mountain (
maybe to catch the sunrise)\, and numerous other hikes\, some very exposed
and demanding such as the Precipice Trail\, which requires using iron run
gs drilled into the rock. Consider a boat ride to the light on Bass Harbor
. And of course there are bars in Bar Harbor - DUH! [Actually\, the name i
s supposed to be derived from a sand bar but I have my doubts :)]
