  one you carefully composed\, but the one where you threw out the rulebook
  entirely?\nA slow shutter speed is one of the most versatile tools in pho
 tography depending on how you use it — you can freeze a story in streaks o
 f light\, dissolve a busy scene into something painterly\, or create image
 s that look nothing like what your eye actually saw.\n\nWhat we’ll explore
 :\nIntentional Camera Movement — ICM — takes that idea to its logical extr
 eme. Move the camera deliberately during a long exposure and the world dis
 solves into something painterly and abstract. This is the chaos end of the
  dial.\nThe same slow shutter speeds that make ICM possible open up a whol
 e range of other techniques worth exploring.\n\nAnd there’s a reason to re
 visit them: some modern camera systems can now compensate for camera shake
  at shutter speeds as low as one second. One second! I’d spent years treat
 ing 1/60th as the floor and 1/50th as a risk worth taking on a good day. I
 t changes what’s possible — and it’s worth finding out what your specific 
 kit can actually do.\n\nFor instance:\nSlow shutter — let movement in the 
 scene register as blur while you hold the camera steady. With modern in-bo
 dy stabilisation\, you can push this further than you might expect.\nPanni
 ng — the control end of the spectrum. Track a moving subject and let the b
 ackground dissolve into streaks of colour and light. The subject stays sha
 rp\; the world around it does not. Particularly well suited to smartphone 
 shooters.\nND filters — in bright conditions\, a neutral density filter cu
 ts the light and lets you hold slow speeds without blowing the exposure. E
 ssential if you want shallow depth of field alongside motion blur in dayli
 ght.\n\nWhere we’ll shoot: 1.00pm\nWe’ll meet outside the National Gallery
  on Princes Street — buses\, cyclists\, pedestrians\, constant movement ag
 ainst a strong architectural backdrop. Inside\, the galleries and shopping
  malls offer something quieter: the location gives us flexibility whatever
  the weather brings.\n\nWhere we’ll finish: 2:30pm — meet for drinks at Mi
 lnes Bar\, Hanover Street.
