SUMMARY:Learning to Wait: Simone Weil on Attention and Will
LOCATION:Green Lake Branch of the Seattle Library
DESCRIPTION:Saved in Palaner as: saved\n\nPalaner match: 22% · why: lots of
people going\n\n"We should try to remedy our faults through attention\, n
ot through will."\n— Simone Weil\n\nMany of us assume becoming a better pe
rson is a matter of trying harder: exercising greater discipline\, making
better choices\, or strengthening our will.\n\nSimone Weil offers us an al
ternative. What if the deepest forms of learning\, moral growth\, and love
depend less on force of will than on the quality of our attention? What i
f we change\, not by trying harder\, but by learning to attend more deeply
?\n\nIn this session of the Seattle Applied Wisdom Lab\, we will explore S
imone Weil's short essay\, Attention and Will. Together we'll ask:\n\nWhat
is attention?\nWhy is genuine attention so difficult?\nCan attention be c
ultivated?\nWhat does attention have to do with truth\, goodness\, and wis
dom?\n\nThe required reading is approximately 10–15 minutes. Participants
are asked to read it before attending so that the text can serve as a shar
ed point of inquiry.\n\nBecause discussion depends on everyone engaging th
e same text\, please RSVP only if you genuinely expect to do the reading\,
  attend\, and participate.\n\nFormat\n\nThis will be a structured\, discus
sion-based session.\nThe goal is not to debate immediately or give long sp
eeches\, but to understand the reading together before evaluating it.\nWe'
ll move through a series of guided discussion blocks designed to help us i
nvestigate one question at a time.\n\nThe required reading is short (appro
ximately 10–15 minutes)\, but reading it beforehand is essential. Our disc
ussion assumes everyone has engaged with the text.\n\nReading\nhttps://lap
