 ion:\n\nIn this talk\, Joey Cannizzaro will explore the ancient meaning of
  time lords\, which is a crucial but enigmatic aspect of forecasting and t
 iming techniques in ancient astrology.\n\nThe English phrase “Time Lord” i
 s the most common translation of the original term chronokrator but it ine
 vitably conceals nuances in the Greek.\n\nWhat’s lost in this translation 
 of χρονοκράτωρ is the semantic richness of the term κρᾰ́τωρ\, krắtōr. Ther
 e are numerous other words for lord\, leader or ruler that might have been
  employed when ancient astrologers coined this neologism. It’s a significa
 nt literary and spiritual statement that astrologers chose this specific s
 uffix\, krắtōr\, which sounds so similar to kratēr\, the ritual wine-mixin
 g vessel that was the fulcrum of the ancient Greek symposium.\n\nPuns and 
 close homonyms (paronomasia) are moderately frequent in Hellenistic Greek 
 literature as well as the New Testament\, functioning as deliberate rhetor
 ical\, mnemonic\, and theological tools rather than meaningless jokes.\n\n
 The wine vessel was employed as a metaphor for time by ancient astrologer 
 Vettius Valens (120 – 175 AD). In a passage of his famous anthology\, Vale
 ns explores the wine vessel as a symbol for how students of astrology migh
 t use or misuse time in the pursuit of their studies. (Antologiae\, 221.26
 -222.14K\; 210.32-211.17P)\n\nPredictably\, there has been a tendency to p
 roject the patriarchal notion of a masculine king onto “Time Lords” / chro
 nokrators. However\, the embedded pun leads us closer to the figure of the
  symposiarch: the person charged with mixing wine at a feast and distribut
 ing it to attendees. The symposiarch facilitated the drinking games\, flir
 tations\, gift exchanges\, seating chart\, and managed the flow of tension
 s during the symposium.\n\nWhat if Time Lords (“Chronocrators”) in ancient
  predictive astrology aren’t demagogues or kings\, but symposiarchs mixing
  each of our fates according to their own unique natures\, motives\, and p
 assions? Through semantic slippage and dream logic\, this talk somehow arr
 ives at a compelling historical root for this idea\, reconsidering astrolo
 gical time through the lens of the krater (or ancient Greek wine-mixing ve
 ssel) and extending this into a framework for divination and interpretatio
 n.\n\nBeyond its application in predictive and natal astrology\, this fram
 ework might contribute something valuable to practitioners of astrological
  magic and ritual and inform larger discussions about the nature and quali
 ty of time. Also\, it’s fun to think of the planetary gods this way—as our
  divine bartenders and masters of ceremony rather than authoritarian lords
 —and perhaps it can help us practice meeting the events of life without an
  attitude of control and domination ourselves.\n\n$$ In Person Event:\nA s
