SUMMARY:Earning Influence: Why Strong Design work doesn't move the room
LOCATION:Hipages Group
DESCRIPTION:Saved in Palaner as: saved\n\nPalaner match: 38% · why: lots of
people going\n\nWelcome Back CCX Sydney to our events for 2026 from mysel
f\, Lydia\, Sylvia and James and we are planning a bumper selection of spe
akers for this year. Our next event on August 18th will feature two unique
presentations from Designers Dan Whelan and Ariel Blackman\nboth from Com
monwealth Bank.\nWe will be hosting by the Team at Hipages special thanks
to Carlos Guedes and Natalia Furtado.\n\nOur first Talk from CBA Product D
esign leader\, Dan Whelan:\nEarning Influence: Why Strong Design Work Does
n't Move the Room\n\nAbout Dan's Talk\nYou're doing great work. Decisions
move on without you anyway. Here's why — and\nwhat has to be true before t
hat changes.\n\nIt's easy to assume that if the work is good enough\, it e
arns its own influence. It doesn't.\nDesign gets described\, by default\,
in process terms — what was explored\, tested\, shipped —\nwhile the room
is listening for risk\, revenue and consequence\, meaning how we describe
the\nwork to each other isn't the value our stakeholders want to see. Good
work can fail to move a\ndecision\, because how it's described isn't conn
ected to the decision's value.\n\nThis talk covers the two things that usu
ally get in the way of making your work land.\nFirst\, the translation pro
blem: why the same piece of work\, described two different ways\, gets\ntw
o completely different receptions from your non-designer stakeholders.\nSe
cond\, the gap underneath: work that fails to land because it was never li
nked to key\nbehaviour to start with\, it was built around untraceable bes
t practice.\nThis talk covers both\, so the next time you do good work\, i
 t doesn't get ignored.\n\nAbout Dan\nDan Whelan is a design leader with 20
years across companies including Intuit and CommBank\,\nand some of Austr
alia's most complex financial products. She writes and speaks on decision\
nquality and behavioural design\, helping designers close the gap between
doing strong work and having it influence the room.\n\nOur second speaker
also from CBA will Ariel Blackman\, User Experience Designer on Neurodiver
gent Strategies\n\nAbout Ariel:\nAgile design specialist with a talent for
Graphic and UX/UI Design. Masterfully shape the brand identities of organ
isations through telling diverse stories that breed connection. An experie
nced resource that can instantly oversee existing projects in from initial
creation and execution of design\, to follow through with production to t
he finished product. Dedicated to changing the digital landscape through c
reating designs that evoke the satisfaction of users whilst providing a la
sting sense of wonder.\n\nPlease note that we will be back at Hipages for
our August Event so please familiarise yourself with The location and Star
t Time. We hope to See you in August and are really looking forward to Hea
ring from both Dan and Ariel.
